Smokies Fall Foliage

Fall Foliage in the Smoky Mountains

Peak Season: Mid-October – Mid-November

Any season is a great season to visit the Smokies because this area has a little bit of everything, but autumn offers an especially unique opportunity for visitors because the fall leaves here are unlike anywhere else, which makes it one of the most opportune times to have a Smoky Mountain vacation! There is a wide variety of accommodations within the area that make the most of the season's greatest features. The custom-built log cabins and chalets provide the rustic, yet cozy atmosphere that really compliments the pristine mountain environment, and truly allows you to feel as if you can escape from the city life and getaway to the woodlands of nature in a place that encompasses the authenticity of the surrounding forests and timberland. The condominiums are built with luxury and convenience in mind as they sit high in the mountaintops and along the main Parkway which is peppered with attractions, shopping, and entertainment. In addition, most lodging options are fully equipped with numerous amenities including hot tubs, jacuzzis, game rooms, theater rooms, swimming pools, saunas, fireplaces and more! Of course, one of the most sought after features, however, is an outstanding gorgeous view, and the Smoky Mountains do not disappoint.

The most exceptional fall viewing is currently at its peak at most mid-altitude levels within the area. Peak color at the mid and low elevation exhibits the most phenomenal fall color due to the vast diversity of trees that are fixated at this altitude. Color is progressing rapidly and is practically showing a full range of hues presently. It is the the ideal time to take full advantage of the beauty this area has to offer during this most spectacular time of year. There are a number of ways to take in the captivating fall mountain views in and around the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You could simply take a scenic drive along the roads winding throughout the area or head out on foot for a hike along some of the many trails in the park. Check out the scenery from above by going for a ride in a helicopter or take flight on the new balloon ride. Even if you just sit out on the deck and admire the views from your vacation rental, you will be sure to be impressed.

This year's display of color has been forecast to be quite spectacular, and since the area is already well known for showcasing the fall leaves better than most places throughout the nation, it provides the perfect backdrop for making your vacation especially memorable. It's hard to forget the vibrant oranges and yellows as they fade into the radiant crimson reds and dark purples, but that doesn't mean you won't want to capture this great exhibition with some photos to show off to your friends and family back home! So, if you are lucky enough to be in the Smokies right now, then know that your trip has been supplied with an extra special essence of mother-nature. And, if you haven't had the pleasure of visiting recently, then start planning your trip the the area for next autumn. You'll be glad you did!

Want to get a sneak peek of what to expect? Check out up-to-date images of a range of views at a plethora of elevations by viewing the park’s webcams at http://www.nps.gov/grsm/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm.

Dollywood is now ranked highest in the Best Food, Friendliest Park, and Best New Ride categories! Dollywood continues to draw visitors to the area, and this recognition will enhance its appeal even more.

Every award is considered extremely prestigious and the competition is fierce. Winners are chosen by a panel of experienced theme park enthusiasts from around the world who submit votes for each category.

Dollywood's newest ride, the Wild Eagle, is the nation's first winged coaster and won the Best New Ride category hands down. Another of Dollywood's iconic coasters, Thunderhead, is a long time favorite that ranked fourth place in the Best Wooden Coaster category.  The Pigeon Forge theme park also placed third for Best Park and fourth in the Best Landscaping category. Dollywood's Splash Country placed fourth in both the Best Waterpark and Best Water Ride categories.  The annual awards ceremony was even hosted at Dollywood's Celebrity Theater this year. The park's official spokesperson, Dolly Parton, was thrilled to attend the awards program and accept the awards in person.

So, whether you're a first time visitor or you've been a frequent visitor year after year, you have got to bring your family to Dollywood and see all the new award winning features this park has to offer for yourself!

You cheer on your family as they participate in logging events including axe swinging, tree climbing, chainsaw carving, and log rolling. Shades of the Past Rod Run Roundup

Location: Dollywood Splash Country, Pigeon Forge, TN

Dates: September 7th – 8th, 2012

The Smoky Mountain area hosts a number of car shows throughout each year so if you are a fan of classic cars, then you've probably heard of the The Shades of the Past Rod Run Roundup, and maybe even attended in the past. It has become an annual event over the past few decades, and this year marks the 30th year for this highly anticipated event. If you are a novice car enthusiast, you will be in for a treat. This isn't just any car show, it exhibits a wide range of cars including rods, customs, and classics alike. Plus, it is truly a unique event because it only showcases cars through 1972.

It all takes place at Dollywood Splash Country in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and even if you are in the remote area, you're bound to see rods driving up and down the Parkway all weekend long. Traffic may be quite atrocious, but at least you'll have all these nice cars to look at as you slowly make your way through town. Some folks even set up lawn chairs all along the strip and watch as the parade of classics pass on by.

Once again, this event is a part of the AMSOIL Street Rodder Road Tour Stopover. Admission to the "Shades" Hot Rod Roundup is $10 per day, and free for children under the age of 12. There are several options for parking, but most spectators choose to park for free at the city's paved lot on Teaster Lane, and ride one of the city trolleys to and from the show site for a small fee of .50 cents each way. Scooters will be available to rent at Gate #2, there are tons of cars to see after all.

So whether you are an avid car enthusiast, or even if you have just gained an appreciation for classics recently, the Shades of the Past Rod Run Roundup is the best place to discover an enhanced admiration for pre-73 cars! Who knows, maybe you'll be so inspired, you will even become a participant someday in the future!

For more information on this event, visit www.shadesofthepast.com. If you are searching for lodging near the "Shades" Rod Run, visit www.smokiesrentals.com.
